my Standards

Farmer Jim's animal husbandry standards that are practice 365 days of the year on the Farm.

A standard or grading system for Grass Fed Beef does not exist in Canada, so I have borrowed the standards practiced by the "American Grass Fed Beef Association" I employ a sustainable approach to farm management designed to enhance land, water, and air quality.I use the highest standards of animal husbandry in my grazing programs to support humane treatment and welfare of all my animals and birds.

FORAGE

Grass fed Cows are born, raised, and finished on open grass pastures with perennial and annual grasses, forbs ( broad leaf herb) and legumes are the sole energy sources, with the exception of mother’s milk, from birth to harvest. Hay or silage, from any of the above sources may be fed to animals while on pasture during periods of inclement weather or low forage quality.

CONFINEMENT

Grass fed cows, pasture pork, free range chickens, and grass fed lambs, ( ruminants) must graze pasture where they will receive all of their nutrition and be allowed to fulfill their natural behaviors and basic instincts of grazing at all times. The only exceptions to this standard are emergencies that may threaten the safety and well-being of the animals or soil, and management practices such as roundups, sorting and shipping.

ANIMAL HEALTH AND WELFARE
Kelp will be provided free choice to adjust the animals’ nutrient intake and to correct deficiencies in the total diet energy source.

The feeding of animal by-products is prohibited, and no antibiotics, or hormones of any type will be administered.
